Škocjan Caves: The Complete Practical Guide — Prices, Times, Steps

Škocjan Caves are one of the largest underground canyons on Earth and Slovenia's first entry on the UNESCO World Heritage List (1986). But before you go, you want to know three things: how many steps, how much it costs, and whether you should go to Postojna Cave instead. Here are the answers, verified directly against the park's official page.

Important distinction: there are two different standard-tour routes, not one. Seven months of the year (January, February, March, April, October, November, December) the default exit is at Velika dolina — shorter, around 500-800 steps. The remaining five months (May-September) run the full route: 5 km, around 1000 steps, taking two and a half to three hours. If you've read that it's "3 km and 500 steps" in one place and "5 km and 1000 steps" in another, neither was wrong — they just describe different times of year.
There's also a separate, far more demanding tour, the Hanke Channel (caving gear required, 3-4 hours, 2 km, 400 steps, €100/person) — that's not the standard tour, don't confuse it with the table above.

The April/October price (€18) often falls through the cracks between summer and winter pricing in other sources — it's an official, standalone middle tier, not a rounding.
Škocjan or Postojna?
We won't tell you which is "better" — they're different experiences:
- Škocjan Caves: walking tour, no train, more physically demanding (stairs), a more dramatic canyon, less mass tourism, UNESCO status.
- Postojna Cave: a train covers part of the route, easier access for older visitors and young children, larger tourist infrastructure, higher visitor numbers.
If your time or mobility is limited and you want comfort, choose Postojna. If you want the real feeling of an underground canyon and stairs aren't a problem, Škocjan is unforgettable.
What to wear
Lower temperatures (12°C) and humidity mean: one more layer than you'd think in summer, and sturdy shoes with grip — the path is slippery in places. An umbrella won't help much; a real rain jacket will.
